Alice Shepard

Alice Pauline Shepard, 88, of Agency, died at 12:20 a.m. March 25, 2019 at Vista Woods Care Center in Ottumwa.

Alice was born April 8, 1930 in Davis County, IA to Ernest Hopkins and Velma Pauline Blackwell Swaim. She attended a one-room school until moving to Ottumwa to continue her education. After graduating from Ottumwa High School, she worked at Northwestern Bell in Ottumwa for a few years. She married Norman Shepard on October 15, 1949. They had six children and celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary shortly before Norman's death on December 15, 2015.

Alice was a devoted mother and spent most of her life nurturing her children while working at home. She enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing and helping with school events. Her husband's job with Morrell's transferred their family to Estherville for a number of years. At age 50, Alice returned to college to complete a degree at Iowa Lakes Community College. She became the office manager at Holiday Express Trucking Co. in Estherville until her husband's retirement. Alice and Norm returned to the Ottumwa area while Alice worked in the office at Hormel until her own retirement. She continued to enjoy raising a garden with Norm and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at every holiday. Alice will be remembered by many for her strong work ethic, sweet personality and kind heart.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Estherville and Davis Street Christian Church in Ottumwa.

Alice is survived by a son, Michael Shepard of Agency; three daughters, Terry (Jack) Lupei of Sugar Grove, IL, Kristi Fay of Wallingford, Joni (Harry) Nicholson of Ottumwa; 7 grandchildren, Jon Lupei of Aurora, IL, Ashley Shepard of Agency, Sami Hopkins of Iowa City, Tracy (Dane) Ross of Estherville, Amy Fay of Dallas, TX, Shane Nicholson of Ottumwa and Emily Nicholson (Andy Noe) of Eldon; 8 great-grandchildren whom she adored, Drake Harl, Shaylin Nicholson, Ava Shepherd, Hadley and Donna Noe, Ryleigh Fay, Warren Ross and Ryan Shepard and a sister Judith (Steve) Robertson of Greeley, CO.

She was preceded in death by a son, David Shepard, a daughter, Vicki Shepard a brother, Ernest Dean Swaim, a sister, Rose Bennett and son-in-law, Jerry Fay.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa with Rev. James H. Wakelin officiating. Burial will be in Taylor Cemetery in Appanoose County.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to Taylor Cemetery or Hospice serving Davis and Wapello Counties.
