Substance abuse help organization has served area for 50 years

All locations of Compass Pointe are set to close Monday, according to sources with the agency. The agency is reported to have zero days of cash flow. Three organizations in the region declined an offer to take over the management of the agency. CEO JoAnn DeYoung has resigned. Under various names, the substance abuse prevention and service organization has served Northwest Iowa since 1969 for treatment referral and counseling, and 1983 for prevention services to the community. Compass Pointe's substance abuse treatment and prevention programs cover a nine-county area. Each of the counties would have been called upon for $10,000 each to keep the agency open through April. The Emmet County supervisors at their Tuesday morning meeting took no action on this request. The Estherville News will have more information on this situation in Thursday's edition.

With all locations of Compass Pointe closing, people in need of addiction treatment will have to travel a long distance for help. No word on whether prevention initiatives in rural Northwest Iowa will continue.
