No one under the age of six in the Guardian Angel Preschool class had a case of the Mondays. It was Music Monday and Deblyn Russell of Creative Connectionz was in the house with her collection of drums to share with a lively circle of young children at the preschool.

It's Week of the Young Child, a celebration week sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. According to the Association, it's an annual celebration designed to spotlight early learning, young children, their teachers, families and communities.

Music Monday was important because, according to NAEYC, "When children sing, dance, and listen to music, they develop their language and early literacy skills while being active and encouraging movement."

Kristy Funston, school director, said Tasty Tuesday would focus on healthy eating and fitness at home and school. Each child was assigned a different fruit with certain qualities, whether it was a color, the letter it started with, etc. All the fruits would come together to make a friendship salad.

"Cooking together connects math with literacy skills, science and more," officials from NAEYC said.

The week finishes out with Work Together Wednesday, Artsy Thursday, and Family Friday.

Guardian Angel Preschool is now accepting enrollments of children for the fall session. For more information, call the school at 712-209-1319.
