She received her education from the Gruver schools. While she was in high school, she enjoyed being on the basketball team as well as cheering for other students' activities for her school.

Vera and Vernon had been childhood friends throughout their school years. In 1941, she was united in marriage to Vernon Origer in Fairmont, Minn. Vera and Vernon celebrated 76 years of marriage on Oct. 28, 2017.

A family of lifelong farmers, Vera and Vernon made their living farming east of Estherville. During their farming years, Vera was involved with the operation of the farms as well as having many farm activities of her own. She was the extra pair of hands when Vernon needed help with crops or animals. There was always a huge garden for fruits and vegetables and Vera canned or froze the produce for the winter. As with any farm wife, Vera was the children's chauffeur, shopper, laundry lady, etc. But they loved living on the farm.

Vera and Vernon enjoyed watching sports and other school activities, especially when their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were involved. Any warm evening would find them at a ball field somewhere. In the winter, they and the grandchildren would be gathered around the kitchen table playing games and snacking. Vera and Vernon spent many happy hours playing cards, especially 500.

She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she served many times as a church officer. She headed the funeral committee for approximately 30 years and helped in the kitchen for all of the funerals. They were members of the Emmet County Farm Bureau for more than 60 years and were involved with their many activities. She also participated in neighborhood clubs and organizations, where she enjoyed the company of other farm wives.

Vera's hobby was quilting. She spent much time creating lovely quilts for every member of her family, including a baby quilt for her great, great grandson. Her chest of completed quilts was inspiring for anyone who wanted to follow in her footsteps.

Left to cherish Vera's memory are her children: Phyllis and partner, Don of Denison, Iowa; Jim and wife, Karen of Tampa Bay, Florida; Dale and wife, Diane of Kissimmee, Florida; Vickie and husband, Bill of Spirit Lake, Iowa; Gordon and wife, Diane of Estherville; Lance and wife, Heidi of Estherville; 17 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by husband Vernon, her parents, brother George, sister Grace, and sister Alice.

Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church in Estherville.
