Estherville News

Recently employees from Avera Holy Family Hospital, Avera Medical Group Estherville, Emmet County Public Health, Estherville Lincoln Central Community School District and North Union Community School District received training in Mental Health First Aid.

This training opportunity was brought to Estherville through the Emmet County Mental Health Wellness Coalition, which was recently formed to further address mental health concerns in Emmet County.

The training took place on Friday, June 7 and is meant to help attendees assist individuals experiencing mental health or substance use-related crisis, just as a CPR course would help individuals assist someone having a heart attack. In the Mental Health First Aid training, the participants learned of the risk factors and warning signs for different mental health and addiction concerns, as well as, strategies for helping someone in a crisis situation.

Throughout the training, attendees discussed the action steps used to address individuals who may be experiencing panic attacks, suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors, nonsuicidal self-injury, acute psychosis, drug and alcohol use abuse, and reaction to traumatic events in an individual's life.

The Emmet County Mental Health Wellness Coalition will use this information to further address the needs of the community in regards to mental health.
