Estherville News

The Emmet County Auditor's Office has received a resolution from the city of Estherville calling for a special election on the proposition of entering into a loan agreement and borrowing money thereunder in a principal amount not to exceed $4.1 million for a municipal swimming pool.

This special election will be held on August 6, 2019. There will be one polling location for this election and it will be the Farm Bureau building located at 421 1st Ave. North in Estherville. The polling location will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Due to the fact that the council position for Ward 1 was appointed and not elected, that position will also be on the August 6, 2019 ballot pursuant to IA Code Section 372.13.

All candidates interested in the position must complete an Affidavit of Candidacy and a nomination petition and file it no later than July 12, 2019 at 5 p.m.with the Emmet County Auditor's Office. The filing period begins immediately.

The nomination petition must include 10 signatures of eligible electors in Ward 1 of the city of Estherville. Nomination packets may be obtained from the Emmet County Auditor's Office or from the city of Estherville.

The following dates apply to this special election:

n Candidate filing period: now through July 12, 2019 at 5 p.m.

n Candidate withdrawal deadline July 15, 2019 at 5 p.m.

n Objection deadline: July 15, 2019

n Worry-free postmark deadline: July 22, 2019

n Pre-registration deadline: July 26, 2019

n Mailed absentee ballot request deadline: August 2, 2019

Early voting will begin as soon as ballots are available from the printer and a press release will be issued when the Auditor's office receives them.

Due to the fact that the city of Estherville is a run-off city, a successful candidate will need to win by a simple majority. A simple majority, then a run-off election would be required and that election would be held Sept. 3, 2019.
