Marilyn Maye becomes honorary Estherville citizen

July 7, 2019
Estherville News

Nancy Anderson, chair of the Estherville Chamber Board and Kenny Billings, Mayor of Estherville, conferred upon singer Marilyn Maye a certificate making her Honorary Citizen of Estherville.

Maye, who was a fixture on the Johnny Carson show and who continues to perform each summer in the Lakes, was invited to Estherville sometime in the 1980s to perform at the Estherville Winter Sports Festival. Maye, an Iowa native who now lives in California, had never been to northwest Iowa in the winter. She was inspired to write a song about Estherville.

Anderson presented Maye with a picture and biography of Esther Ridley, for whom Estherville is named, and the certificate.
