Classics, holidays and fun

November 24, 2019
Estherville News

Monday evening’s community band concert was held in a new venue, the Estherville VFW. The bar was open for soda and spirits as the concert and jazz bands presented a diverse program. The Northwest Iowa Concert Band (above), directed by Rich NIcklay, presented the Captain America March, The Rainbow Division March, Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, Adeste Fideles, and a medley called Christmas with Mozart, which melded Eine Kleine Nachtmusik with Good King Wenceslaus and Deck the Halls, The Magic Flute with Angels we have Heard on High, Rondo Alla Turca with Jingle Bells, and something that could be mistaken for Beethoven’s 9th with Joy to the World. The Northwest Iowa Jazz Band started with a soulful rendition of Bye Bye Blackbird, George Gershwin’s Embraceable You, a Hexagon Mat Dance, Autumn Mist, and Big Mama Cass. Scott Benjamin directs the jazz band. The community bands are partially sponsored by Excel Estherville, a non-profit corporation and affiliated division of the Estherville Chamber of Commerce. Spring rehearsals will begin Feb. 10 with the spring concert April 20, 2020. Rehearsals are held Mondays in Estherville with the jazz band from 6:30-7:30 and the concert band from 7:30-9:30 p.m.
