The Iowa Lakes men shot a blistering 65 percent from the field in defeating Minnesota West 109-79 on Saturday.

The Lakers jumped out to a 23-2 lead over the first 6 1/2 minutes on the way to a 56-34 half-time lead.

"We came out with some of probably the best life and the best energy, which is something we've been struggling to do to get off to a fast start," said Iowa Lakes coach Troy Larson.

Six players reached double digits in the scoring column led by Kevin Cook with 19 points, followed by Keshawn Pegues with 16, Boston Grimes with 15, Justin Brookens with 14, and Alan Kikwaki and Xavier Evans each with 13. Pegues and Cook each had seven boards while Brookens had seven assists and Malcolm Clayton had five assists. Clayton also had seven points, Josh English had eight, and Dillon Carlson had four.

Minnesota West was led by Jaimon Cheek with 14 points.

"Boston Grimes and Justin Brookens both made a lot of plays early," said Larson. "They got to the pressure spots of the defense early and made the right decisions.

"We came put played with great energy and it allowed us to get off to a good start. Our guys competed hard for most of the game and we can get better when we do that."

"As the game went on, we had really good contributions from our bigger wings-the guys that play our 4 and 5. Kevin Cook played really good, Keshawn plays good and Alan and Xavier both played well off the bench."

Iowa Lakes (6-2 overall) will host the Northwestern College Junior Varsity at 7:30 p.m., today, Nov. 25.
