Valera L. Schroeder

Val told many stories of growing up on the farm with her parents and brothers and sisters. Her favorite childhood story was the adults and children joyfully dancing around the Christmas tree lit with real candles at the Fredsville Lutheran Church.

She went to a one room country school and then graduated from Dike High School near Cedar Falls, Iowa. During World War 2 she helped her parents with the farm work while her brothers were at war. She completed nursing training at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa and worked there as a registered nurse.

She met her husband, Kenneth (Kenny) Schroeder on a blind date arranged by Kenny's sister, Neva Schroeder Kieler. They were married at the Fredsville Lutheran Church September 2, 1951. Together, they farmed and raised five children near Gruver, Iowa.

Val continued her 30-year nursing career at Holy Family Hospital in Estherville retiring in 1990.

Val lived with intention and her retirement was filled with purpose. She enjoyed playing golf and cards with friends and family. She was an avid reader, gardener, and quilter. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Estherville where she participated in the United Presbyterian Women's group often serving as president. She was an active member of the Estherville Garden Club. She loved making floral arrangements using flowers from her own gardens for the group's projects. These arrangements were lovingly referred to as Mom's "4-H projects."

During retirement Val made over 60 quilts of which she gave many to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. On her 90th birthday, Val was presented with a picture book of her family members with the quilts she had lovingly made for them.

Valera was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Schroeder, her parents Albert and Helga Knudsen, brothers Dale Knudsen and Donald ( Betty) Knudsen, sisters Eunice (Fred) Rocca and Erma (Reynold) Etringer Roethler, and son-in-law James Andersen.
