She was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church in Estherville, where she previously served as financial advisor, and often times volunteered in the kitchen for various church functions. For many years she and Eldon traveled with the Iowa Lakes Community College men's basketball team. Gladys made homemade cookies and bars for the team for every bus trip. She enjoyed lending a helping hand and worked for Dinner Date for a number of years. Also, for many years she went to the nursing home every day and played cards with the residents, among other volunteer services, and in 2008, she was named Volunteer of the Year.

She remained in their home in the country for 10 years after Eldon passed away, moving to the Good Samaritan Apartments in the Fall of 2013. In her spare time, she enjoyed hanging out with her friend Roxie Stevens putting puzzles together, reading, and in warmer weather, sitting outside just enjoying nature. She also enjoyed opportunities to play card and board games with her grandchildren and playing with the great grandchildren.
