Matthew Handeland

Matt attended Graettinger Community School for grades K-12 and graduated in 1995. He continued his education at ILCC where he was on the baseball and golf teams before transferring to UNI and graduating in 2000 with a degree in environmental studies. Matt was able to apply his love of the outdoors by working as a naturalist for Franklin County where he was known as the "conservation kid" because of his size and youthful looks. He also worked in various construction jobs over the years although construction sites were often traded for golf courses on nice days! In 2007 he was united in marriage to Karen Ohl, and they made their home in Waukee and Waverly, IA and Fox Lake, WI before he moved back to the Graettinger area in 2017. Matt was a member of Wallingford Lutheran Church.

Matt loved the outdoors-golfing, fishing, hunting, camping, tubing, boating, and skiing. His favorite team was the Denver Broncos although he was quite disappointed with their recent seasons! He enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest, was a kid at heart and a friend to many. He had a smile that would light up the room and will be greatly missed.

Matt is survived by his mother, Jeanne (Rex Lundgren) of Wallingford; his brother Mark (Keith Lee) of Minneapolis; his sister Jen (Wes Snyder), nieces Ella and Ava and nephew Tyse of Colfax; aunt Peggy Skattebo of Colorado Springs; uncle and aunt Tim and Donna Handeland of Estherville; great aunts Maxine Skattebo, Carol Kropf, Lenora Kropf, and Alice Olson; many cousins, and a large group of friends that are far too numerous to list!

Matt was preceded in death by his father, Dan; grandparents Earnest and Mary Margaret Skattebo and Lester and Lois Handeland; and his uncle Jim Skattebo.
