Lakers polish off season with pair of wins

Iowa Lakes to host Panthers in first round of Region XI Tourney on Tuesday

IOWA FALLS - Ellsworth made its first 3-point shot to start the game against seventh-ranked Iowa Lakes on Saturday.

After that, it was all Lakers, as they responded with a 20-0 run on the way to 44-28 half-time lead and kept the pressure on in the second half to win 95-59 against the Panthers.

The two teams will meet again on Tuesday, this time in Estherville, as the third-seeded Lakers host the sixth-seeded Panthers in the first-round of the Region XI Tournament. Game time is 7 p.m. The winner will face either Iowa Central or Des Moines Area at the home of the highest remaining seed on Thursday at 7 p.m.

In Saturday's game, Iowa Lakes shot 51 percent (38-of-74) from the field, including 48 percent (12-of-25) from 3-point range. Ellsworth shot just 34 percent (22-of-65) while shooting 23 percent (7-of-30) from beyond the arc.

Five Lakers reached double digits with Justin Brookens and Boston Grimes each scoring 20 points. Brookens was 8-of-10 from the field, including 4-of-4 from 3-point range while Grimes shot 6-of-12 from the field, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range.

Alan Kikwaki provided 14 points off the bench while Keshawn Pegues had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Malcolm Clayton had 10 points, and Kevin Cook and Josh English each had eight points. Xavier Evans had four points to go with 11 rebounds.

The Lakers shared the ball well with 29 assists led by Brookens with seven, Clayton, Dillon Carlson, Kikwaki and Evans each had four assists.

On Wednesday, Iowa Lakes had no trouble with Quakerdale Prep Academy, leading 70-23 at halftime on the way to a 129-47 win.

Six Lakers reached double digits led by Dillon Carlson with 25. Justin Brookens had 21 points, Alan Kikwaki and Xavier Evans each had 16 points, Keshawn Pegues had 14, and Malcolm Clayton had 11. Also, Boston Grimes and Kevin Cook each had nine points, Josh English had six, and Kaden Reynolds had two. Cook had a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Lakers had 24 assists led by Brookens with nine while Evans had eight.
