NIACC too much in Region XI semifinal

MASON CITY - After losing to top-ranked North Iowa by just eight points a month ago, Iowa Lakes didn't fare as well on Saturday as the Laker women lost 82-54 in the Region XI semifinal.

The Trojans expanded their lead throughout the game, leading 17-11 after one quarter, 39-23, at halftime and 66-42 after three quarters. North Iowa Area advances to its seventh-straight Region XI final against fourth-ranked Kirkwood on Monday.

For Iowa Lakes, Destiny Broussard led the way with 15 points while Shareece Smith had 14 and Breanna Wendland had 12.

Iowa Lakes wraps up a 19-11 season and bids farewell to nine sophomores-Breanna Wendland, Shanice Vaughn, Shareece Smith, Tejah Hayden, Tyler Pacheco, Bethany Rehse, Destiny Broussard, Safiyer Coleman, and Brianna O'Donnell.

On Wednesday, Iowa Lakes advance to the semifinal with its 81-71 quarterfinal win over Southwestern.

The Lakers jumped out to a 20-12 lead after one quarter, led 32-26 at the break and pulled away to a 57-42 lead before holding off a Southwestern rally in the fourth quarter.

"So happy for our team," said Iowa Lakes coach Ashley Martin. "Our kids came out ready to go. I thought we guarded really well and were locked in on the defensive end. This is a huge accomplishment for our sophomore class and our program."

Five Lakers reached double digits with Smith scoring 23 points, Wendland had 21, Coleman had 14, Broussard had 12, and Hayden had 11. The Lakers shot 51.6 percent (32-of-62) from the floor while Southwestern shot 38 percent (22-of-58).
