Volunteer to help those who can’t

April 6, 2020
Estherville News

A need has been identified in Emmet County for a volunteer program to pick up groceries and other essentials for those at-risk or home bound as the COVID-19 public health emergency continues. This program is designed to help those that are identified as at-risk of severe illness and in self isolation, those that will potentially become ill, or those self-quarantined due to possible exposure to COVID-19.

"We know that most people have family and friends that are able to assist, but hope to reach those that might no," said Emmet County Public Health Nurse Kathy Preston. " This program is designed to ensure safety for both the volunteers and those that are in need of this service, by providing education, background checks, and volunteer credentialing."

The first roll out of the program is to recruit volunteers. Because the CDC identifies those most at risk of severe illness as those over 60 years of age and those with underlying health conditions, officials have the following criteria for volunteers:

n Must be under the age of 60

n Have no underlying health issues

n Possess a valid Iowa Driver's License

n Have NO symptoms of even mild illness when volunteering

n Pass a background check

n Have a reliable vehicle

People wishing to volunteer to help with this program in their city are asked to contact their respective city hall to obtain an application and those people wishing to volunteer to assist in the rural areas of Emmet County can obtain an application from the township clerk or delegated trustee of your township listed below. Applications are also available at the Emmet County Sheriff's Office or on-line at www.emmetcountyia.com . The contacts listed below will also be on Emmet County website.
