Weekend accident claims Estherville man

An Estherville man has died of injuries received in a two-vehicle accident Saturday evening near Superior.

The Dickinson County Sheriff's Office says at around 11:15 p.m, Saturday night, a two-vehicle injury accident was reported in the 1700 block of N-14. One person was reportedly trapped in a vehicle.

The Sheriff's Office says 46-year-old Luis Lopez-Carabello of Estherville, was traveling northbound on N14 in in a 2002 Chevrolet 2500 Express Van pulling a trailer. Lopez-Carabello crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a southbound Ford F-150 pickup driven by 30-year-old Shane Gailey of Ft Dodge.

The van and trailer ended up rolling over and blocking the roadway. Lopez-Carabello was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated. Gailey's vehicle ended up in the East ditch.

Lopez-Carabello was transported to the hospital with serious/life threatening injuries. On Monday, Lopez-Carabello passed away because of his injuries.

Gailey complained of pain but did not sustain any obvious injuries.

Both vehicles were totaled. The accident remains under investigation and charges are expected.
