Mustangs take down Midgets

NEWELL - Newell-Fonda's Alex Spangler kept Estherville Lincoln Central batters off balance for most of six innings.

The Midgets didn't get a baserunner to second base until the seventh inning when Spangler gave up consecutive walks to Daryl Jensen and Izaak Sander. But with a 4-0 lead, the Mustangs brought in Mason Dicks to shut the door. Dicks quickly got two outs as Ryan Schiltz lined out to left field and Seth Busch went down on strikes. Will Larson came up with a two-RBI double, but a strikeout ended the threat allowing Newell-Fonda to survive with a 4-2 win.

Busch had the only two hits off Spangler, as he went 2-3, while Larson finished 1-3.

Larson started on the mound for ELC, and pitched nearly as well through five innings. But a walk and a two-out single, followed by ELC's only error and another single scored three runs runs for the hosts, who plated one more run in the sixth inning.

Only one of the four Mustang runs were earned, as Larson struck out three batters, walked two and gave up two hits.

ELC (6-8 overall) hosted Bishop Garrigan on Wednesday and welcomes Lake Mills to Estherville today.

In junior varsity play, ELC won 13-3. Alex Jensen earned the win, giving up three earned run on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks in four innings of work.

ELC finished with 11 hits with Carson Grange going 2-2 with an RBI while Nick Lyman was 2-3 with an RBI. Grant Love and Griffin Hoyer each had one hit and two RBIs while Blake Evans, Jensen, Zavion McMurran, and Landon Vaske each had a hit an RBI and Carter Snyder also had a hit.
