The Alpha Battery of the Iowa Army National Guard will hold a deployment sendoff ceremony for service members at the Armory at 2 p.m. Aug. 1, 2020. The ceremony in the Armory is open only to soldiers and officials.

The event will be streamed live via the Alpha Battery's Facebook page. The public is invited to send off local soldiers immediately following the ceremony by means of a bus escort. The route for the bus escort will begin at the Armory, north on 18th Street to Central Avenue and west to First Street, then heading south out of town. The public is invited to stand along the route, socially distanced, with signs and other regalia to show its appreciation for the service members.

About 330 soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 194th Field Artillery, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, will deploy in support of Operation Freedom's Sentinel to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. Central Command is made up of 20 nations in the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia, including Afghanistan, Iraq and other countries. These deployments are anticipated to last about one year. Some service members have already deployed.
